golden moon milk (turmeric latte)

Golden Moon Milk (Turmeric Latte)

Moon milk is warm milk before bed, but upgraded. Instead of dairy, we use oat milk, and instead of honey, we add spices that have been used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries to promote relaxation and sleep: turmeric, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, saffron, nutmeg. The result is a velvety, golden turmeric latte that feels like a proper evening ritual.

At home, our golden moon milk has become a little ritual now. On the sofa, something on Netflix, and this warm, spiced cup in hand: that’s my wind-down after long flight days.

What makes golden moon milk so special?

The combination of spices is the key. Turmeric gives the moon milk its golden colour and has well-known anti-inflammatory properties. Cinnamon and cardamom add warmth and round out the flavour. Vanilla makes everything soft and gently sweet without needing much added sugar. Saffron adds a subtle floral note and an even deeper golden colour. Nutmeg is the classic sleep spice, even small amounts have a calming effect.

You don’t need all the spices at once to make the golden moon milk. They work so well together that leaving one or two out if you don’t have them at home is absolutely fine.

Oat milk is my base of choice, it has a naturally calming quality and gives the moon milk a creamy consistency. Almond milk works just as well.

FAQ

Can I drink the golden moon milk cold?

Warm works best, the spices open up and the calming effect is stronger. But as an iced latte in summer it’s delicious too.

Which milk works best?

Oat milk for creaminess, almond milk for a slightly nutty flavour. Full-fat coconut milk from a can makes it especially rich, almost a dessert version.

Can I use fresh turmeric instead of powder?

Yes, fresh turmeric is more aromatic. Just grate a small piece finely and stir it in with the other spices.

Why add a pinch of black pepper?

Piperine in black pepper significantly increases the bioavailability of turmeric, your body can absorb it much more effectively. You barely taste it, but it makes a real difference.
